Interior designer Daniela Alilovic shares her complete process for designing a bedroom with AI — from discovering your style to sourcing furniture and visualizing real pieces in your space before you spend a dime.

The bedroom is one of the most personal spaces in a home. It’s a place of rest, relaxation, and comfort—a space where people want their own personal style and personality to be reflected.

When I designed my own bedroom this year, it was a very personal journey and one that felt incredibly fulfilling as a designer. However, throughout the process, I realized that designing a bedroom comes naturally to me because design is what I do for a living. For many people, creating a beautiful bedroom that feels personal, unique, and truly reflects who they are can feel overwhelming.

My mission as a designer has always been to empower people to make confident design choices, whether that’s through hiring me directly or by using the tools and resources I share. I believe good design should be accessible to everyone, in whatever capacity works for them. It’s one of the reasons I built my platform, Spaces by Dee, where I connect with clients from around the world, review interior design AI and software, and share practical tips and inspiration for home decorating.

And that’s exactly why I wanted to put together this guide on how to design a bedroom using AI. Tools like DecorAI offer homeowners an accessible way to navigate the design process by helping visualize ideas, explore different styles, and reduce some of the overwhelm that often comes with decorating a space.

How to Design a Bedroom with AI

Step 1: Use AI to Explore Your Design Style

AI tools are a great way for homeowners to discover and refine their design style, and this is an important first step in the design process. One of the fundamental rules of interior design is knowing where you’re going before you start. Having a clear vision for the space makes every design decision easier.

The challenge is that many people aren’t quite sure what style they gravitate toward, which can leave them feeling stuck before they even begin.

This is where AI can be incredibly helpful. With just a few clicks, AI design tools can reimagine your bedroom in a variety of different styles, allowing you to quickly explore possibilities and see what resonates with you.

Take my bedroom, for example. I started with a simple photo of the room before I began decorating. Using DecorAI, I was able to generate multiple design concepts in completely different styles. Below, you can see examples of the room reimagined as a Scandinavian-inspired bedroom and as a vintage-inspired bedroom.

I also love the fact that the AI prompts you to input a specific colour direction, allowing you to explore different colour palettes within various styles. Colour schemes and combinations are also an element of design that many people struggle with.

This exercise is a great way to confirm the overall design direction you want to pursue before investing in furniture, paint, decor, or renovations.

Step 2: Use AI as a Design Assistant to Source

With DecorAI, you can use the design assistant feature to help source furniture and decor pieces for your space, eliminating some of the design-choice paralysis. You can also ask general design questions such as, “What type of lighting should I incorporate into my bedroom?”—small but important considerations that the average homeowner may not immediately think about.

Having AI assist with shopping and sourcing can feel like a huge weight lifted off a homeowner’s shoulders, making the entire process more streamlined and less overwhelming.

Step 3: Plug In Your Furniture With AI and Visual The Space

This is another area where AI can be extremely helpful. AI allows you to visualize specific items within your bedroom, meaning you can “plug and play” different pieces you already own, as well as items you’re considering purchasing.

This helps you avoid unnecessary returns, reduces design regret, and ultimately supports better decision-making—something I consider a win.

Take this example: I uploaded a bed frame into DecorAI to see how it would look in my bedroom.

As you can see, DecorAI does a fantastic job of showing how the bed frame would actually look within the space. Using this tool, one can empower themself to make the right design choice.

Why a Designer Would Recommend AI to Design a Bedroom

You might be wondering why a designer would encourage homeowners to use AI to assist with their design process, especially when it may seem like it conflicts with what I do and the services I offer. The answer may surprise you, but I do not feel threatened by AI or its role in the design industry.

AI is a great tool to support the design process, especially for homeowners who want to take a DIY approach and have no intention of working with an interior designer—often simply because it may feel out of reach financially or otherwise. This is where AI tools come in and help bridge the gap, giving people more confidence in their own design decisions.

For homeowners who are looking for a more hands-on experience, AI can be a great starting point to explore ideas and experiment with direction. In fact, many of my clients now come to me with AI-generated images as inspiration. Even so, they are still looking for that personal touch and refinement that comes from working with a human designer. AI doesn’t replace the value of professional guidance.

My mission, once again, is to make interior design accessible in whatever way that looks like. For some, that may mean using AI tools. For others, it may mean hiring a virtual interior designer like myself, or working with a full-service interior designer locally.

Everyone has a need for good interior design, and my goal is to empower individuals to make the right design choices for themselves. Whether that means utilizing AI tools or consulting with a designer, both have a valuable place in the interior design industry.
