How do I judge whether an AI interior design app is any good?

Updated August 19, 2026

Short answer

Test every app on the same photo of your own room and check one thing first: does the result still look like that room? Then compare speed, whether it can change one element without redoing everything, whether it produces anything actionable beyond an image, and what the free tier really allows.

A fair test

  1. 1Use one photo, taken properly, in every app.
  2. 2Ask for the same style and the same instruction.
  3. 3Drag the before-and-after: did windows, doors and proportions survive?
  4. 4Ask for one small change — a different sofa only — and see whether the rest of the room stays put.
  5. 5Check what you can do with the output: save it, export it, price it, hand it to a builder.

Questions worth asking

  • Does it work on the platforms you use, and does work sync between them?
  • Does it keep a history, or is every result disposable?
  • Can you cancel easily and get your data out?
  • Is it honest about what the images are — concepts, not construction documents?
