How do I judge whether an AI interior design app is any good?
Updated August 19, 2026
Short answer
Test every app on the same photo of your own room and check one thing first: does the result still look like that room? Then compare speed, whether it can change one element without redoing everything, whether it produces anything actionable beyond an image, and what the free tier really allows.
A fair test
- 1Use one photo, taken properly, in every app.
- 2Ask for the same style and the same instruction.
- 3Drag the before-and-after: did windows, doors and proportions survive?
- 4Ask for one small change — a different sofa only — and see whether the rest of the room stays put.
- 5Check what you can do with the output: save it, export it, price it, hand it to a builder.
Questions worth asking
- Does it work on the platforms you use, and does work sync between them?
- Does it keep a history, or is every result disposable?
- Can you cancel easily and get your data out?
- Is it honest about what the images are — concepts, not construction documents?

Comparisons & alternativesWhy not just use a general AI image generator for interior design?A general image generator will happily invent a beautiful room — but usually not your room. DecorAI is built around preserving the real space in your photo: walls, windows, ceiling height, perspective and camera angle stay put, and the tools are shaped around actual renovation decisions like flooring, staging and single-object edits.Getting startedDoes DecorAI keep my actual room, or does it invent a new one?DecorAI redesigns the room in your photo rather than generating a new one. Walls, windows, doors, ceiling height, perspective and camera angle are preserved unless you specifically ask for a change, so the result reads as your own space with new finishes, furniture and lighting.Photos and uploadsWhat makes a good photo for AI interior design? The best photo for DecorAI is taken from a doorway or corner, holds the camera level at about chest height, shows the floor, the walls and part of the ceiling, and is evenly lit and in focus. A photo like that gives the AI enough structure to keep your room recognisable while it restyles it.
